Set in modern-day Hungary, the novel tells the story of the Hungarian struggle against Ottoman enslavement. The key to the work is the defence of the Eger fortress by a handful of brave men led by Istvan Dobo against the Turkish sultan's army, which was much larger than theirs. As is typical of all adventure-historical novels of the 19th century, the book also features the passionate love of the Hungarian knight Gergely Bornemisza and the beautiful Eva.
