Description

The novel of Robert Merle, one of the leading French writers of the twentieth century, is based on real events that took place in the eighteenth century. Sailors from the English ship Bounty, on which a revolt against the captain's cruelty broke out, as well as several natives from Tahiti, settle on a desert island. The bloody clashes that erupted between the colonists, according to many researchers of Merle's work, reflect in miniature the stages of social development. The protagonist Adam Purcell, a staunch opponent of any violence, gradually realises the need for tougher and more decisive action.
